Media and Communications

Over the past two decades the digital revolution has radically transformed circuits of media and communications across the Asia Pacific region. However, the shift from so-called ‘old’ to ‘new’ media has been extremely uneven both within specific countries and across different regions, leading to a complex new environment. The Asia Pacific region is home to Korea and Japan, two of the most densely networked societies in the world, as well as China which now hosts the largest population of Internet users – the vast majority of whom live in the major cities of the Eastern seaboard. India, although only a small percentage of its population is online, is an internationally recognised source of workers with Information Technology capital. The Media and Communications node is comprised of a number of projects that seek to understand the history, present situation and future trajectory of changes to the media and communications environment and their implications for Australia. Areas of research include:

  • Internationalising Internet Studies
  • Internet Histories
  • Internet Regulation and Filtering
  • Broadband vistas: Rural and regional development of Broadband Internet
