The Asia Pacific STS node investigates the role played by science and technology in social cultural and political change in the Asia Pacific region.

Key themes to be explored by the group include:

  • Comparative studies of public understanding of science and civic epistemology in the Asia Pacific Region (this includes concern with the relationship between science technology and indigenous knowledge)
  • Comparative studies of patterns of governance of techno-science in Asia –Pacific Region (this includes concerns with managing environment, risk, law and regulation and development issues)

The group will form also form a node in the emerging Asia Pacific STS Network. The Network currently involves scholars from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and China. This network aims to promote collaboration between STS scholars in the Asia Pacific Region. It had its inaugural conference in New Zealand in 2008, and is planning to have meetings in Australia in 2009 and Japan in 2010.
