Seconded 2005-7 to Cardiff University, UK, as Senior Research Fellow on ESRC-funded project, "Genetics, religion and identity: a study of Bangladeshi Muslims in Britain".

Research Specialisation

I studied in Bangladesh, completing my first degree at Dhaka University. After moving to Australia, I completed my PhD at the University of New South Wales in 1989. I have taught at the University of Newcastle since 1989 (including two years at HIHE before amalgamation). My research interests include women, development and communal relations (Bangladesh and South Asia); women and health, especially childbirth (Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Australia); gender analysis of NGO activities, microcredit and development (Bangladesh); gender issues in Islamic societies and among Muslims in Western societies; migration and identity; education and development (Bangladesh); Islam, genetics and identity (UK Bangladeshis). I have carried out thirteen field research trips to Bangladesh and South Asia between 1982-2004. Consultancy work has included three DFID consultancies in Bangladesh, 2000-2001; work for CARE Bangladesh, 2004; legal consultancies in Australia, etc.
