10th Conference of the Asia Pacific Sociological Association.

The first event marking the MOU between UOW and the University of Malaysia, Sabah (USM) was the 10th Conference of the Asia Pacific Sociological Association held in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia in December 2010. The general theme of the conference was “Social and Environmental Change: Opportunities and Challenges for the Asia Pacific”.

Workshops - “Globalization, Human Rights and Mobility: Exploring the Gender Trope” and  “How Safe is Safe? Evaluating Migration Channels for Women Migrant Workers” 

Vicki Crinis was invited to present papers at two Workshops at the Institute of South East Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore. The first workshop “Globalization, Human Rights and Mobility: Exploring the Gender Trope” was organised by ISEAS, NUS and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. The workshop explored the multi-faceted dimensions of human rights concerns among low skilled migrant workers from Southeast Asia. The workshop held on November 22-23 was attended by scholars and migrant worker NGOs from the region and from Australia, Canada and Europe.  The workshop refereed papers will be published as book chapters.

The second workshop “How Safe is Safe? Evaluating Migration Channels for Women Migrant Workers” held the same week November 25-26, 2010 was organised by Asia Research Institute at The National University of Singapore, ISEAS and the Asian Centre, at the University of New England, Australia. The Workshop explored the meaning of safe migration and how it has become integrated, shaped, produced and applied in the Southeast Asian context. This workshop was attended by scholars, NGOs, United Nations officials and other migrant worker activists in the region. Selected papers will be published in a special journal edition publication.

Vicki is currently conducting research on the Batik and Songket (traditional craft) industry in Kelantan one of the lesser developed states in Malaysia. Unfortunately November – December is in the middle of the monsoon season and many of the roads to the villages are cut off with minor flooding. Aside from the constant rain the research is going well.

She leaves Kota Bharu on December 8 to attend the 10th Asia Pacific Sociology Association (APSA) Conference in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The APSA Conference is jointly organised by the School of Social Sciences (SSS) and the Ethnography and Development Research Unit (EDRU of University Malaysia Sabah and the Asia Pacific Sociology Association and CAPSTRANS, Faculty of Arts, University of Wollongong. Associate Professor Ruchira Ganguly-Scrase is part of the organising committee.

India the focus of community engagement seminar

Short Films IndiaUOW’s Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies (CAPSTRANS) held a very successful community engagement seminar on India yesterday (Sunday 15 August).

The aim of the forum was to bring together members of the public and the University. Emeritus Professor Stephen Hill inaugurated the event, which was co-sponsored by the local radio program, Geetmala, Vox 106.9 FM . Read more »

Universiti Sains Malaysia delegation visit CAPSTRANS

USM visitCAPSTRANS and Faculty of Arts have recently been involved in a program of collaborative activities under the LEADHER grant program with a small team from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM; which UOW have a signed MOU). LEADHER is the Leadership Development for Higher Education Reform Program, an initiative of the International Association of Universities (UNESCO).The main purpose is for each institution to develop a broad understanding of each other's internationalisation strategies and to promote research linkages, particularly between UOW's research strength CAPSTRANS (Centre for Asia-Pacific Social Transformation Studies) and USM's Social Transformation Research Platform. Gender and Occupations and Interventions in the Asia Pacific, 1945-2009 

A recent two-day workshop at UOW featured discussions on a range of social issues from the gendered impacts of small arms and light weapons, Australian women and development in East Timor to a grassroots perspective on the intervention program in the Northern Territory. Read more »
