CAPSTRANS Graduations at the University of Wollongong

CAPSTRANS postgraduate students graduated on 15th December as part of the university's graduation ceremonies. Students were joined by staff, including Deputy Director Dr Lenore Lyons, for a celebratory luncheon before the official ceremonies. Other staff in attendance included Masters Coordinator Dr Julia Martínez, Professor Jan Elliot, Dr Kathleen Weekley and Dr Michele Ford, who was also awarded her doctorate in this round of ceremonies.

CAPSTRANS Director Professor Christoph Antons featured in a joint book launch at the Sydney Business School, on October 27th. His book, Law and Development in East and Southeast Asia was one of two books being launched at the venue by CAPSTRANS Advisory Board Chairperson, Mr Brian Finn. The other was The Handbook of Human Resource Management Policies and Practices in Asia-Pacific Economics—Volume 1 & 2 by Associate Professor Michael Zanko and Mr Matt Ngui.

Anne-Marie Hilsdon Joins CAPSTRANS

Dr Hilsdon commenced as a research associate with CAPSTRANS in October 2003. She did her PhD on the Philippines which was her original country of interest. Now her focus has shifted to Borneo. She recently started several projects involving women and Islam in conjunction with Dr Santi Rozario. Her current publications include: “Violence against Muslim Women in the Philippines” in Violence Against Women in Asian Societies (eds. L. Bennett and L. Manderson) and “What the Papers Say: Representing Violence against Overseas Contract Workers” in Violence Against Women (Sage journal).

Seth Bush Cycles for Oxfam

One of CAPSTRANS Masters students, Seth Bush, participated in the Oxfam Challenge in December 2003. This is an event aimed at raising much needed money and awareness for Oxfam CAA and its poverty alleviation and social justice programs within developing communities both nationally and internationally.

Seth raised $5000 in funding towards the challenge. He joined 35 other people in undertaking the physical side of the challenge: a 600km cycle ride from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Siem Reap in Cambodia.

Workshop in Alice Springs

CAPSTRANS Director Professor Christoph Antons was asked by the Cooperative Research Centre for Desert Knowledge in Alice Springs to convene a workshop on “Desert Knowledge and Intellectual Property Rights”. The workshop was held on 16 October 2003 in Alice Springs.

Third International Conference of Asian Scholars

On 19-22 August 2003 CAPSTRANS staff attended the Third International Conference of Asian Scholars at the National University of Singapore. Dr Pam Nilan convened a panel, “Labour, Work and Social Change in Asia”.

CAPSTRANS-SEARC Conference

On 11-12 August, SEARC the Southeast Asia Research Centre of the City University of Hong Kong and CAPSTRANS held a workshop on Migration, Ethnicity and Workforce Segmentation in the Asia-Pacific. Associate Professor Adrian Vickers and Professor Ken Young co-ordinated the workshop.

The papers looked at a range of issues from general surveys of the major problems, to case studies of Thai workers in Hong Kong, the plight of Indonesian women involved in the labour trade, and maids in Taiwan.

Onati Conference

Onati conference


Conference participants in the hallways of the old university of the Basque country, which is now home to the Onati International Institute for the Sociology of Law.

On 10-11 April 2003, the Onati International Institute for the Sociology of Law held a workshop on “Globalisation and Law in Asia: From the Asian Crisis to September 11, 2001” at the Institute in Onati, Spain. This was convened by CAPSTRANS Director Professor Christoph Antons, together with Professor Volkmar Gessner of the University of Bremen.
