the under-representation of women in japanese politics

Emma Dalton

Research program: Mobility and Exclusion

I propose to research the under-representation of women in Japanese elite-level politics. Japan has one of the most dismal records of women's representation in government in the industrial world and I would like to investigate the reasons for this. One of the main reasons I suspect is that women simply don't want to enter the world of politics - that is, they avoid a career in politics out of self-interest. Politics in Japan also has an image unappealing to women - that of being a male stronghold, wrought with corruption, and a career in politics is one that leaves little time for personal or family life.
