Research program: Culture and Representation

During the coming of sound, Japanese colonial film policies established barriers for American distributors and increased opportunities for domestic productions in Korea. The film industry was invigorated by a number of Koreans trained in Japan. This project illustrates distinct local responses to the coming of sound to the Korean cinema.
