The news project

Elizabeth Thomson

Research Program: Culture and Representation

This project, consisting of 11 academics across Australia and overseas, aims to investigate the ideologies behind 'reporter' voice and reporting 'conflict' in news articles in varieties of English, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Vietnamese and Indonesian. The group is particularly interested in the news reporting in the Asia Pacific and is currently working on the project, "Media representations of asian attitudes towards Australia in China, Indonesia and Japan". Given the political instability of the world and ongoing terrorism, it is timely to consider and attempt to reach a better understanding of how news reporting across languages and cultures can perpetuate and create ideological oppositions which contribute to political instability and which drive the hegemonies of power.
