Discovering Negotiated Spaces of Cultural Expression

Examining Japanese Empire Archives

Brian Yecies

Research program: Culture and Representation

This project examines neglected Governors General of Korea archive materials concerning cultural policy debates at four major policy-making conferences. It demonstrates how empires operate and maintain control through media regulation. It builds upon Brian Yecies' previous research with a substantially different discovery about how colonial subjects negotiate a counter-hegemonic space for the construction and expression of culture.
