Mapping the Genres of Japanese. The Mapping the Genres of Japanese (MGJ) research team is a group of scholars and postgraduate students located around the world with an interest in linguistic descriptions of Japanese spoken and written genres. The long term primary aim of the Mapping Genres in Japanese project is to map the major genres of Japanese, particularly those in the workplace and those found in the education system. Understanding how different genres organise grammatically unlocks them, in the sense that their structure becomes transparent. Knowing their structure and grammatical features will offer insights into Japanese language behaviour and how social roles are enacted in society. A secondary, but no less important aim of the project seeks to identify, describe and provide reference material for teachers of Japanese (kokugo) and Japanese as a Second/Foreign Language in order to better tailor curricula to the vocational needs of students.
