linguistic exploration of 'persuasion' in japanese

Motoki Sano

Research Program: Culture and Representation

My PhD study explores the act of persuasion in writing in Japanese culture using systemic functional theory. It is a linguistic investigation of how Japanese people persuade their audiences, reflecting their culture and their language. The corpus includes the Cabinet documents written by Japanese PM Junichiro Koizumi, editorials of national newspapers, academic articles and essays written by academics for general consumption. The study identifies the grammatical, semantic features and cultural value expressed in the persuasive texts. It also explores the relationship between the language and the culture in persuasion.
