Origin and Development of Korea's Screen Quota System

Hollywood's Action and Reaction (Funded by the Asia Research Fund)

Brian Yecies

Research program: Culture and Representation

This project focuses on the origins and development of the contemporary Korean screen quota system and traces Hollywood's actions and reactions regarding the distribution of domestic and international films in the Korean market. It examines rare archive materials in the United States concerning the export of American films to Korea, and uses this information as a case study to develop major theoretical insights about the industrial and cultural pressures Hollywood has placed historically on the national cinema of Korea.
