Globalisation and development: impact on indian women workers

Shusheela Pandian

Research program: Mobility and Exclusion

The impact of Globalization on women’s work in India is a relatively unexplored area of research. Some authors have perceived the consequences to be beneficial in terms of progress, modernization, economic and social well being. But for many it is about collaboration between national governments and international companies in search of profit resulting in the exploitation of the poorer sections of the society. This project will examine sectors that have opened up to the global economy directly and indirectly: call centres and women working as out-workers and in the informal sector in the garment industry in Tirupur in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. Some of the main areas, which will be discussed in the interviews and subsequently analyzed, include: occupational mobility, wages, empowerment of women in the workplace, attitudes of women towards work and the attitude of the employers towards the women employees, education, caste and social constraints and family life.
